There is  another label inside with the makers indication that  he won a gold  medal in Parma exhibition.  From the 17th century Turin was a very special place for violin making. During 19th century Turin became the most important city in the world where G.F. Pressenda and Giuseppe Rocca (also some other excellent makers) created masterpieces. Some of these instruments are magnificent in appearance and sound, bringing a world record price almost every time during an auction sale.Enrico Melegari was working in Turin (according with William Henley) between 1845 and 1888. We have seen a few instruments made by this maker. These instruments made with certain character that is easy to recognize. Skillful workmanship, beautiful arching, choice of fine acoustical materials and most importantly composition of the varnish make these instruments an outstanding and classical sounding.  This is a good and typical example of the maker. It is in excellent condition. The sound of this instrument is definitely in the category of older, 18th century Italian instruments. The length over the back is 35.4 cm.
