Description
1962 - s/n 46671 - original not restored with original case. All electronics work. Ready to Play I bought this off original owner in 1970 and played it for several years. It has been in my closet ever since. Photos were take yesterday (8/26/08)   Double sharp cutaway mahogany body, layered black pickguard, mahogany neck, 22-fret bound rosewood fingerboard with pearl trapezoid inlay, Tune-o-matic bridge/side-pull vibrato, blackface peghead with pearl Les Paul logo inlay, 3-per-side Kluson tuners with double ring plastic tuners, nickel hardware, 2 covered humbucker pickups, 2 volume/2 tone controls, 3-position switch. Gibson Serial Numbers, Feb 1961 to 1970. All models, stamped in back top of peghead. No "MADE IN USA" stamp below serial number!   Range              Year -----              ---- 0100   to 42440    1961 42441  to 61180    1962 61450  to 64222    1963 64240  to 71040    1964 Mid-1960 to 1963:Two plastic rings on the plastic "tulip" tuner knob. "Kluson Deluxe" still in a single vertical row. On the bottom side of the tuners stamped into the metal it says "D-169400 PATENT NO." The exterior lubrication holes are the small type. These tuners are often called "Single Line, Double Ring". High grade case was black on the outside, and yellow on the inside. The black outside changed from smooth to rough during different periods of the 1960's. Also the handle changed from a leather covered metal to a hard molded plastic type about 1963. The small brass Gibson plaque was still used until the later 1960's. A 1962 Les Paul SG would be a highly desirable specimen to a serious collector or a wealthy player.  In late 1960 or early 1961, Gibson redesigned what had been the Les Paul Standard into the SG design, and continued calling it the Les Paul Standard.  The first versions had the Gibson Deluxe side-pull vibrato tailpiece and “Les Paul” on the headstock.  By mid-1961, these models had “Les Paul” on the truss rod cover The 46671 serial number would be consistent with a model from around 1962 The Standards have a Les Paul engraved truss rod cover from '61 to early '63.
